Indonesian Gemstones Dealers Mine a Growing Market

Gemstone, Stone

A gemstone craze is sweeping Indonesia, proving highly lucrative for many in the industry as demand draws more people to exhibitions and gives rise to pop up shops and ecommerce websites.

The stone of choice is agate, a type of quartz that forms in layers and is known for its beauty and range of vibrant colors. Known locally as batu akik, the gemstone has become so popular that websites are devoted to picking up on the latest trend and offering advice on how to spot the best.

David Acris, 35, the owner of a gemstone store in Jakarta, said the craze started two years ago, “but it’s getting more and more popular in the past year.” And it’s infecting people regardless of age, class or location.
